A fun project: Flower Magnets

I used to love magnets way before I started working with ceramics. So I love being able to make my own now. I usually make them when I need a break from bigger clay projects. It's a fun, light and inviting way to try new things and practice my painting skills.

I recently opened a Magnet Club on Patreon that people can join to receive a handmade magnet every month. Club members support me as a maker and help me to continue on my creative path. The monthly magnet is a little token of appreciation from me, and a way to make sure I keep making them 😊

The magnets I made for the Magnet Club so far are tiny glaze paintings on a plaque of clay, so I thought it would be nice to some up with something special this month. I worked on a fun little project I thought would be nice to share: flower magnets 🌸

They're small and quite simple in shape, but I love how cheerful and whimsical they look together! I also like that they're slightly rounded and that you can combine all kinds of colors and patterns on them.

To create their shape, I used a flower shaped cookie cutter and after cutting them out, I put them in a round plaster mold that I still had in my studio from older projects. I left them to dry for a little while (plaster absorbs water and as the flowers are small, they don't need long). I then cleaned them, flattened a small bit of the back surface (for the magnet) and added a small bit of clay to the front middle, where I also sculpted a small face.

As you can probably imagine, painting was the fun part. I added lots of colors, decided to give them a bit of gold luster too and when all the firings (three in total) were complete, I added a little magnet to the back. It was a creative trip where I got a short break from the usual projects, play around and experience a little something new. And, lucky me, they turned out so fun! Part of the walls in my studio are iron plates, so I can put them on lots of places here (and make many more..)

Join the Magnet Club

The flower magnets will be sent out to Magnet Club members on Patreon at the begining of next month. If you's like to receive one too (and a new one every month), you can join here. You will also get early access to my shop restocks, a discount code to use on a future purchase and, mort importantly, my eternal gratitude 🫶
